Chapter 11

“She’s done it. No thanks to you.” Desire stretched back, her lithe form commanding armies and kings throughout time. She was impossible to describe as an individual as those who saw her saw their desires reflected, she was a force now, and when she had started, she had been freer to move and be moved by men. How foolish she had been.

“We have just doubled down. Two birds with one stone, as they say, Lachlan is set to be the most powerful human in a long, long time.” Fury bit into a plate of meat, tearing it like her namesake demanded. “I can’t see how we won’t flush her victor out this way.”

“It’s not Voldi, he is too self-righteous. High elves would not resort to treachery like this, nor would they be so obvious as to choose Ricard.” Desire glanced through the ones who had succeeded in awakening. “Vraet is a sneaky one, and he hasn’t even used his ability yet. Surely that could be a ploy for us to underestimate him. I’ve already marked Mordred. Ash-born are crafty.”

“Don’t waste your breath.” Fury crunched on a knuckle, the bone and cartilage giving under her perfect jagged teeth. “Envy will not be working alone, just as she did not attack your temples alone. She had help, and I will not rest until she feels the same loss as us.”

“Gluttony, she has the most to lose by this game. Her world is overrun with her indulgence, and they are beginning to look just like her. I will stab her corpulent belly and let her fat rolls suck up the blade and with it any evidence of my fingerprints.” Fury sighed; Desire had been going on like this for days now. They had been spending far too much time together, Fury looked at all the red meat she had been desiring.

“No matter how much you want it, the champion will not stand up to be cut down like a weed.” Fury started gnawing on the bones like a dog. “We have tasted a small victory, and now we must let the seeds grow into an oak. If we don’t like them, we can always cut it down and start anew.” Fury watched Desire closely, she wanted to see a motherly reaction, but there was none. This wouldn’t have bothered her in the many thousands of years they had been close, but it did now. Fury was invested. Lach would be a tool for her, a weapon to use against those who stood in her way. The power she would feel as he took back what was stolen from them, would be worth it all. Desire should have been wanting that too, but she was distant. It was as if she wasn’t thinking correctly about the long game.

“They are disposable. You wanted to hear me say it?” Desire spun the scrying portal, randomly shifting between all the awakened beings. It looked like a canvas of art, each man making love, bonding, running through fields, and jumping into rivers.
